Windows Mobile homepage updated at Microsoft.com

Microsoft has launched a Silverlight powered update of the Windows Mobile homepage at Micosoft.com. The launch is part of a new project to better promote its consumer offerings, which under the old codename was referred to as FTP168 (Free the People 168).

The new website promotes Windows Mobile devices by allowing the user to compare them to other devices on a wide variety of carriers. Users can compare features such as touch screen, flip keyboard or WiFi.

Along with the site update, the Windows Mobile Owners Circle had been renamed to Windows Mobile Total Access, which is still promoting the 3rd party applications that run on Windows Mobile.

Sprint HTC Mogul and HTC Touch to get WinMo 6.1 upgrades

There is a rumor circulating the internet that Sprint’s HTC Touch and Mogul will be receiving WinMo 6.1 upgrades. The news originally came back in April when Sprint said it would be releasing them but did not specify an exact date.

Now, the seemingly official upgrades have been posted to xda-develoeprs.com and are available for download. With the download, you get a new rendering engine for IE and the “Zoom Out” mode for full page preview. On top of that, you will get Microsoft’s threaded text messaging app.

Vodafone Australia to offer unified communications

Vodafone, Cisco and RIM are partnering up to bring a unified communications solution called Vodafone Business One for small and medium businesses sometime later this year. In short, this service will allow your your mobile and landline to share a number and voicemail box, as well as enabling enterprise UMA calling for Wi-Fi calls while you’re in the office area. Solutions like this already exist, but it’s cool to see RIM getting directly involved with one. Who knows? In the long run, maybe fixed-mobile convergence will be just another one of RIM’s base services. For more info, and one helluva flash site, head on over to Vodafone Business One.

Make Opera 9.5 Act Like Firefox, Internet Explorer

A forum member on msmobiles has figured out a way to spoof Opera 9.5 so that it can act like Firefox or Internet Explorer.

Actually you can change the user agent in Opera Mobile 9.5

In the address bar, type in

about:config
scroll down on the page to item User Agent and click on it.
It says Spoof user agent ID

1 is obviously Opera Mobile 9.5
2 is firefox
3 is desktop IE 6

If you’re a lucky owner of the new HTC Touch Diamond that comes pre-loaded with Opera 9.5, you can give it a go, the rest of us will have to wait until mid July.

The jB5 Windows Mobile Browser from Jataayu Software

The jB5 Mobile Browser from Jataayu Software, a Windows Mobile browser, adds some unique functionality that may make for a better browsing experience. It seems to share the same rendering engine as PIE, so don’t expect the fantastic Opera 9.5-like rendering.

Since the web page rendering is very similar to PIE, page loads aren’t terribly quick, tables aren’t always correctly aligned, etc. Also, you can’t flick scroll or tap and drag to pan. But, there are some pretty cool features of jB5:

1. Quickly add a web link to your Today screen (seen in the first screenshot above)
2. Toggle between multiple web pages (seen in the second screenshot)
3. Auto-scroll, which lets you read long web pages without continually pressing the down arrow (speed adjustments had nice increments so that the page didn’t scroll too quick)
4. Import PIE bookmarks

There is a version for both touchscreen and non-touchscreen devices, and it’s free. It may be good to use while we await the broad release of SkyFire and Opera 9.5. Click here to download.

BlackBerry Cool reviews Sugar Sync

SugarSync for BlackBerry

Between a BlackBerry, work computer, home desktop, and laptop, it’s easy to get your files scattered in a lot of different places. SugarSync knows this and is trying make it quick and easy to make sure you can always access all of your files. They’ve been kicking around for awhile, and I’ve been testing it out since beta. Canadians get 200 Air Miles with their next BlackBerry

Air Miles

Not like you need any more reasons to pick up a BlackBerry Bold when it comes out, but until July 26th., Canadians activating a new BlackBerry will also be entitled to 200 Air Miles, or 500 if you’re getting two devices. Sweet deal! My mum’s taken three trips to Australia from Air Miles alone, so clearly every little bit adds up. Even if you’re not willing to shell out the clams for a BlackBerry 9000, no doubt plenty of other devices will be going on the cheap as a result of the launch. Heck, I hear the BlackBerry 8100 is going for free on Rogers, so why not get 200 Air Miles along with it?
