Windows Mobile 5 E-mail Setup Guide

With the recent purchase of my HTC TyTN, the very first thing I did was set up my email. It’s not the easiest thing to do, so I’ve compiled this helpful guide that will help you set up your e-mail software to use the currently-recommended IMAP protocol. An alternative POP-based guide is available if you are sure you want to use POP instead of IMAP.

1. Open the device’s e-mail client by selecting Messaging from the Start menu.

2. From Menu, select Tools→New Account.

3. Provide your e-mail address in the Enter e-mail address field. Tap Next.

4. At the Auto configuration screen, tap Next (or Skip if the process has not completed).

5. Enter your name in the Your Name field, your Internet ID in the User name field. Tap Next.

6. Select IMAP4 for Account type and enter a useful name for this account, e.g., UMN. Tap Next.

7. At the E-mail Setup (5/5) screen, enter the following information.
o Incoming mail: user1234.email.umn.edu (where user1234 is your Internet ID)
o Outgoing mail: smtp.umn.edu
o Domain: (leave empty)

8. Tap Options.
9. For your device to check for new messages, automatically, check the Connect and check for new messages every box and specify the number of minutes between checks (15-20 or more is recommended). Verify that Connection is set appropriately for your device. Tap Next.

10. Check the Require SSL connection and Outgoing e-mail server requires authentication boxes. To limit the date range of messages to be downloaded to the device, check the Only display messages from the last X days box and set the number of days accordingly. Tap Next.

11. Now you will decide how much of each message to download initially. You may want to change these options later if you find that they do not match your e-mail habits (offline reading, high message volume, etc.).

  • Get message headers only: This setting may drastically reduce the amount of time required to receive messages and does allow full messages to be downloaded individually. Optimal settings for the Include option will depend on your incoming mail volume and the amount of memory available on your device. If you find that your e-mail consumes too much memory, you may want to decrease the message body size (KB) number.
  • Get full copy of messages: This setting allows you to read entire messages offline, but it may take up more storage space on your device. The option When getting full copy, get attachments will make all attachments available to you offline. Set the size limit sub-option if you want to conserve memory.
  • Tap Finish.

    All done!
