The future of mobile web browsing - better than PC

the future of mobile web browsing

I was reading a post today on MobilizedTV, coming from the Mobile Content & Marketing Expo in San Jose California. Back at CTIA, we gave you a first look at the Skyfire mobile web browser. Nitin Bhandari, CEO of Skyfire, had a keynote at MC&ME where he talked about the future of mobile web browsing and it got me thinking.

Bhandari’s speech was mostly focused on the fact that we need convergence in the mobile web. The idea is that there are so many devices out there that provide various elements of the web, but none few can provide the full experience. Bhandari’s view of the mobile web, is therefore a time when convergence is at its peak, and we have millions of mobile devices replicating the PC experience.

What if the mobile web is different than the PC web? The mobile device provides so much more information about a user than a PC can offer. Your telephone calls, GPS location, SMS messages and voicemail can all be relied upon to make an even richer experience than the PC can provide.

Here is a typical example of the future of the mobile web:

I get a phone call from my friend who says there’s a big show after work. The call is transcribed and my social networks know what I’m doing. Friends start messaging me saying they’ll see me at the show.

After work, my phone reminds me of the show, and opens up a Google maps to the venue. I start on my walk and while I’m walking, I get a couple notices about restaurants offering discounts and even messages about where my other friends are at the moment. I decide to keep heading to the venue.

When I get there, the band is setting up. My phone knows what show I’m going to, and lets me read some reviews. This is all without the need to use a search engine or anything. It is just a “touch” away.

After the show, I have a long bus ride back home. At this point, I want full browsing capabilities. But not only do I want full browsing, I want my internet life to be easily accessable. Movies in a Netflix online watching fashion, news in an RSS reader, music iPod style and of course, what Nitin Bhandari is talking about, full convergence. None of this “sorry you don’t have Flash”.

There it is. The mobile web isn’t just a browsing experience. The future of the mobile web is total integration of my real life and virtual life - seamlessly.
