We’ve talked about Poynt, a free local search service, quite a bit on BlackBerry Cool: as a BlackBerry Developer Challenge winner, in podcast form with developer Multiplied’s Peter Werry during BBDC and in recent releases on the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220.
Multiplied has now brought Poynt to the BlackBerry Storm and was kind enough to give us a copy early for a hands-on. After the jump you’ll find Poynt for BlackBerry Storm’s feature list, a bunch of screen captures, and impressions from our time with this nifty application. Or you could just download Poynt at the link below, considering this is one of the best applications out for the Storm right now.

Why is Poynt such a great application? Well, beyond what it actually does, Poynt is likely the most robust and polished BlackBerry Storm application available right now. Unlike other Storm applications that are mere ports from previous versions, the Poynt UI has been built from the ground up for the Storm, and it shows. Poynt is clean and slick, with easy to navigate pages and big menu buttons. All Storm applications should be this easy to use.
Poynt also packs a lot of functionality in its pretty package (alliteration!). Poynt is essentially a local search service with three main components: search for business, movie search, and a ‘map this search’ function. The may not seem like a lot, but when you drill down into each component, there’s a lot of really useful information provided within. For example, the basic movie search for movies/theaters in your area, or by genre/title. Drilling down, however, you can read descriptions of each movie, watch trailers, email the information to your friend, or even call the theater to reserve tickets. You can also map each search made, with street-by-street directions to the final destination.
Other than email, one of the main things I use my BlackBerry for is to Google search information while on the go. With Poynt, I get a ‘more useful than Google’ bundle of information in a pretty package, with GPS and mapping functionality (BB Maps or Google Maps). Did I mention this thing is free? Download Poynt now and tell us how you like it in the comments below.
