iFonetec released an application for the iPhone, called “VideosTone”, which allows for video ringtones. The service isn’t entirely free right now. In order to use the service, you must purchase the software because the free version is filled with so many bugs that it isn’t worth it. For example, if you do not answer the call, the video will keep playing and freeze your phone.
However, if you want to be an early adopter, it can be found in the Installer after the http://app.ifonetec.com source is added. Once installed, you’ll be able to activate it in the settings menu and set the video clip to be used for notifications. The site also gives instruction on how to convert videos for best results as a ringtone.
Hooah, that’s a sale, alright. Punch in the coupon code JULY30 at checkout and get 30% off deals at Bplay - that includes, themes, ringtones and games. Feeling patriotic? Why not grab the Stars and Stripes theme, or O Canada? Maybe looking for a more political angle? Democrat and Republican themes are still up. If games are more your bag, Call of Duty 3 and Whitehouse Rumble are both in the 4th. of July spirit. Looking for ringtones? Bplay has a whole category of patriotic ringtones for ya. If you’d rather save your coin, check out Astraware’s free Fireworks app, so you can get all warmed up for the real thing.
Of course, not everyone’s the flag-waving type - maybe you’d rather just get a good deal a slick iBerry theme. And hey, if you’ve got the Wallet application loaded, Bplay can now get all your payment info from there.
NetFront, the makers of the not-so-popular NetFront Browser, have recently developed what they are calling the NetFront Widget Player. The widgets are constructed through a combination of HTML and JavaScript and function much like mini web pages.
The jB5 Mobile Browser from Jataayu Software, a Windows Mobile browser, adds some unique functionality that may make for a better browsing experience. It seems to share the same rendering engine as PIE, so don’t expect the fantastic Opera 9.5-like rendering.
Since the web page rendering is very similar to PIE, page loads aren’t terribly quick, tables aren’t always correctly aligned, etc. Also, you can’t flick scroll or tap and drag to pan. But, there are some pretty cool features of jB5:
1. Quickly add a web link to your Today screen (seen in the first screenshot above)
2. Toggle between multiple web pages (seen in the second screenshot)
3. Auto-scroll, which lets you read long web pages without continually pressing the down arrow (speed adjustments had nice increments so that the page didn’t scroll too quick)
4. Import PIE bookmarks
There is a version for both touchscreen and non-touchscreen devices, and it’s free. It may be good to use while we await the broad release of SkyFire and Opera 9.5. Click here to download.
BlackBerry users have been getting their kicks with leaked test versions of OS 4.5 for some time now, but now those packing the CDMA Curve and the BlackBerry World Edition have a chance to have some fun. OS 4.5’s biggest features are HTML e-mail viewing, over-the-air device upgrades and free/busy calendar lookup, among other things. If you’re the type to live dangerously, you can grab the OS 4.5 for the BlackBerry 8330 here or here. Just keep in mind these are still unreleased and could do some nasty things to your device.
You’ve seen some of their fine white label work with Yahoo!, but Vlingo’s going it alone with their new application which promises to control pretty much everything on your BlackBerry through voice. All BlackBerrys come built in with a voice dialling app, but Vlingo is going to do a lot more than just that… You’ll be able to text and e-mail by dictation, open applications like Calendar and Maps, search your address book, and make web searches using Vlingo. One very cool feature Vlingo’s packing is Note2Self, where you can pull the classic “Note to self: Pick up laundry. Groom cat. Begin plans for global domination”, which then get tacked onto your tasks, or sent to yourself as an e-mail or text. Super-awesome. I’m really excited about the possibility of third-party apps plugging into Vlingo, too.
Umundo is a pretty neat service that lets you quickly and easily share content from your mobile across a bunch of platforms. Obviously something that touts publishing capabilities right from your BlackBerry gets us a little excited. All you have to do is send an e-mail to Umundo, and it will share the file on Facebook, Orkut, Myspace, Hi5, Yahoo, Google, iTunes and even to other mobile users via MMS. If you find yourself taking a bunch of funny video clips on camera-toting BlackBerry, this could be worth a shot - and hey, it’s a free beta, so what have you got to lose?
On Monday, Microsoft introduced Windows Embedded NavReady 2009, an operating system designed for manufacturers of handheld portable navigation devices. The OS allows for online search through Microsoft’s Live Search and also includes the software maker’s Live Search Map service. You can also get access to MSN Direct Services where you can get information about traffic alerts and fuel prices.
If you’re looking tempted by Mundu, but remain a penny-pincher, Instango just launched, offering free support across multiple instant messaging systems, like GTalk, ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, QQ, Gadu-Gadu and Jabber. Instango also features SMS, mail and RSS access, file and picture sending, as well as a push-to-talk system. Sounds like it’s worth a shot if you’re still shopping around for that one client to handle all your chatting needs.
Mobile-ent.biz’s most recent editorial is about the amount of choice available in the mobile industry. The article uses Sociology professor Barry Schwartz’s book The Paradox of Choice, whose thesis is that too much choice makes consumers unhappy, as the basis for the article. Personally, I have to disagree and say that I will never [...]
The BlackBerry has always been a really unsatisfying device in terms of media. Getting a movie on your BlackBerry involves downloading 3rd party software and although music is a simple drag-and-drop, there aren’t any dedicated keys. To make up for this, RIM is working on a new application for the BlackBerry that will “transfer your [...]
