Zumobi launches social networking app Ziibii for iPhone

for iphone

Zumobi announced the availability of Ziibii, a free iPhone App now available on iTunes . Ziibii users enjoy a new way to stay in-touch and in-the-loop with friends, photos and the world around them. Blending Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and web content into a fresh experience, Ziibii is easy-to-use, fun to explore, and offers great features for wireless consumers as well as brands.

Ziibii enables real-time social interaction between users across a variety of popular social media applications, as well as on-going discovery of news, stories and blogs throughout the day. Displayed on the screen of the handset, Ziibii’s visual expression metaphor is a river with content “rafts” floating with the user’s pre-defined content, including direct-connect to social networking sites and RSS feeds.

Ziibii’s highly engaging environment also offers a unique showcase for brands. With Ziibii’s creative inventory of advertising and sponsorship opportunities, brands are seamlessly immersed into content flow, becoming part of the user’s on-going engagement and product experience. Offering compelling content discovery and real-time interaction between wireless users, Ziibii offers a creative inventory of mobile advertising, sponsorships and media units to maximize brand impact, and features advanced reporting tools and analytics for usage and behavior.

“Smartphones have clearly emerged in the mainstream marketplace, no longer used solely by the business community, and the advent of the iPhone took the concept of the smartphone to the next level,” said John SanGiovanni, Co-Founder and Vice President of Product Design. “As consumers flood to what Zumobi refers to as ‘Superphones,’ Ziibii brings benefits to brands looking for a new way to engage users while providing a unique and fun way for people to stay connected to the content they want.”

Nintaii BlackBerry game review

BlackBerry game

Though I wasn’t a big fan of their Poker Odds Calculator Pro, I really like Mobigloo’s Nintaii for BlackBerry. Some of you may remember us mentioning Nintaii back in October when we discussed the finalists for the BlackBerry Developer Challenge. ‘Nintai,’ a Japanese Kanji that means “patience” offers users a great experience from start to finish - if you can, that is. It’s easy to install, and there’s virtually no setup. The controls are easy to learn and operate. And, there are about 100 different levels (of increasing difficulty), so with a little perseverance this game may in fact teach you all about the meaning of patience.

Bplay adds direct billing for BlackBerry Games

Great news today for members of the BlackBerry Nation looking for an excuse to waste more time on their BlackBerry. Bplay just emailed us to let us know that they now support direct billing!

Direct billing for games is now available for AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint subscribers at Bplay. Subscribers of those carriers can bill Bplay games directly to their phone bills by using Premium SMS. It is available at Bplay through an additional “Bill to Phone” option on the game product pages.

Over time, Bplay will be adding more US and Canadian carriers. We’ve included links below to our three favorite Bplay games.

Texas woman sends 14 year old boy topless photo

SMS and music

A Texan woman was charged with distributing harmful material to a minor when a 14 year old boy’s parents found a topless photo of the woman on the boy’s mobile phone. The 27 year old woman met the boy at their local church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. The discovery of the picture came after the parents also found racy love letters from the woman in question. I hope the woman gets the help she needs.

Mobile users are generally confused by their devices (study)

anger

Pew Internet and American Life Project have released a study saying 48% of the respondents to their survey said they needed help setting up their devices.

* 38% contacted user support at some time
* Men (39%) more than women (22%) are more likely to try to fix it themselves
* 29% of cellphone users had their device fail in the last year
* 23% of those cellphone users never had them fixed

I’m always surprised at the number of people who buy smartphones and other devices but don’t take the necessary time to set them up and get the most out of them. For example, at my university, I met several people with BlackBerrys who did not take the time to activate their push email. They didn’t even know they could get their email on the device other than through Google. They simply bought the phone for its QWERTY and therefore faster SMS.

Flash demoed on Android by Andy Rubin

Now that the first Android phone is on the market, Google is going to have to step up the hype if they’re going to make a dent in an iPhone dominated US market. One of the easiest ways to do this is to promote the key features that iPhone lacks such as Flash Player 10.

In this video, recorded at the Adobe MAX developer conference, Andy Rubin plays Star Dudes by DudeStudios. He also shows some great features such as the ability to zoom in on the video during play.

“We are excited to be working alongside Adobe to bring Flash technology to Android,” said Andy Rubin, director of mobile platforms at Google. “Adobe Flash is crucial to a rich Internet and content experience on mobile devices and we are thrilled that Google will be one of the first companies along with the Open Handset Alliance to bring Flash technology to the smartphone market.”

Now if Android can only wrap its head around a single app store that makes content discovery easy for the average consumer, we’d have a perfect device.

Sony XPERIA X1 gets new Facebook Panel

Sony XPERIA X1

The Sony XPERIA X1
uses an interesting panel system to display content much like Zumobi for BlackBerry. The latest panel to surface on the net is the Facebook Panel. The panel has all the Facebook functionality that you need on a mobile such as the ability to write on a friend’s wall, send them a message, dial their phone number, and so on. Also of interest, the panel shows you who has recently updated their status once refreshed.

Media Network Roundup November 17-21

Turn your iPhone into a VISA point-of-sale machine

Transactions

To be a drug dealer in the new millennium… When I was a kid (tilts back in his rocking chair…) we had to deal with two-dollar bills, debt lists and stealing loonies from my old man’s change jar. Now all Peter Pusher has to do is whip out his iPhone and you’re good to blo—err… go.

Developed by a Seattle startup named Innerfence, the technology is not going to be as straightforward as having a magnetic strip reader built-right-in (though that’s not a shabby idea). What’s needed to to start processing credit card payments from your iPhone is an Internet merchant account (similar to a bank account but with a payment processor for the settlement of e-purchases), a payment gateway (exactly as it sounds—a server for processing said charges), and Innerfence’s app, available from the Apple app store for $49.99.

The monthly fees at $30-some-odd-dollars U.S., transaction fees at south of .50 cents, plus 2%-3% commissioned by the credit card companies hardly make this worthwhile for kids selling nickel bags and permanent markers. But compared to previous technology that pizza delivery guys rock, priced at $4,000 USD, rich university kids could be funding their habits while mum and dad are non-the-wiser. “It’s my tutor… really!”

How to download mobile games from ATT’s carrier deck

RIM

I’ve been getting some of our less technically-inclined readers emailing me asking “how do I download mobile games from my AT&T BlackBerry?” It seemed like too easy of a question to answer so I’ve been avoiding it but there is no such thing as a stupid question and I’ll happily respond.

For this how-to, I’m using an AT&T BlackBerry Bold courtesy of Research in Motion (RIM). The first thing you’ll notice about the Bold is that it has 6 icons on the lower section of the screen. From that list you have (or at least on my Bold): messages, email, address book, calendar, MEdia Net and media.

homescreen

You’re now going to select MEdia NEt. Once selected, you should see a yellow “AT&T World Phone” screen pop up and if your radio is off, you’ll get a message prompting you to turn on the radio. Select OK if this is the case.

Now you’re on the AT&T carrier deck. You’ll notice some links such as “Add Email to Your Homepage” but skip all of that. Also, skip the “My Links” section and scroll down to “Categories.” From there, in option 2, you’ll see “Tones, Games, Apps” which is where you want to be. Click on it.

This will take you to another screen where you are now presented with ‘HOT girls”, ringtones, games, cool tools/apps, videos, color graphics etc. Click on “Games.” It has a little controller icon beside it.

Here is something you should know about the games section. The “Featured Games” are not actually the best games they have to offer, nor are the “Most Popular.” This is the oldest scam in carrier history. Companies like EA pay to have their games featured in the Most Popular section and it has nothing to do with total downloads. When looking for a good game, you should always consult online. For your information, here are just a few great games for BlackBerry:

Texas Hold’em King 3
Kaglom
Golden Tee Golf
Sudoku
Solitaire Legends

Once you click on a game (I’ve chosen Solitaire Legends), you’ll be presented with purchase options, preview/info, share with a friend, game recommendations and more info. Click into the purchase options.

For Solitaire Legends, you can get the “Unlimited Purchase” of the game sent to your AT&T bill for $7.99. This is a little expensive considering you can buy it from Bplay.com for $4.99 (see above link), but I guess you’re paying for the convenience.

Some of the other payment options include Monthly Subscription, MyMEdia Club and Tone Card. These apply to various forms of content you can get off the deck and the MyMEdia Club is where you can join a community and get discounts.

Happy gaming folks!
