Bell offers “Smart/Phone Care”, covers loss/theft (kinda)

bell logo

Effective this week, Canadian carrier Bell is offering a new service to subscribers which (potentially) protects them from loss, theft and damage. I’m a little unsure about our friends to the South, but I’m pretty certain Bell is the first Canadian carrier to offer anything resembling ‘phone insurance’. Bell’s “Smart/Phone Care” service has two plans to choose from:

1. Premium: for $7/month it covers failure due to defective parts and workmanship, normal wear and tear, accidental damage, power surge, loss and theft.

2. Plus: Covers failure due to defects in parts and workmanship.

BlackBerry Storm launch roundup

BlackBerry Storm

After spending time with the BlackBerry Storm during BBDC, it was a little hard to leave it behind. Thankfully, I did so with full knowledge that it would be returning to my awaiting hands very soon. Here’s the latest in BlackBerry Storm launch rumors for a variety of carriers:

PhoneArena is reporting that Verizon will begin selling the BlackBerry Storm in corporate Nov 15th and the following day at BestBuy locations. Ever since our initial Nov 4th post, the release date has been pushed back one day at a time. While we’ve been currently hearing the 19th from our sources, it’s close enough to not matter too much.

BlackBerry News seems to be wavering back and forth between a November 7th and 11th release date for the Vodafone BlackBerry Storm. CSRs place pricing at around £350 ($538 USD). Please take a look at BBNews’ photos for this post, it made my day.

As we reported earlier today, it appears that Bell may receive the BlackBerry Storm on November 21st, shortly after the two releases above. I wonder if Telus will try to undercut them by releasing on the 20th.

Potential Bell and Solo Mobile Q4 lineup emerges - Storm included

The Boy Genius has gathered some more information from the swirling abyss whence all rumors spring forth, this time for Bell and Solo Mobile’s Q4 BlackBerry lineup. While top billing has to go to the BlackBerry Storm, on which BGR has tagged a November 21st release date, Solo Mobile subscribers should be happy a white BlackBerry Pearl 8130 arrive in their stockings as well.

Telus and Bell launching GSM service in 2010

Bell and Telus

Big news for Canadians came out last week regarding their choice of wireless carriers, as it seems that within a few years, Canada will be a fully GSM country. Both Bell and Telus have announced their intention of launching HSPA GSM service by 2010, with the intention of moving towards an eventual 4G LTE network. Both Bell and Telus plan to layer the upcoming HSPA networks over their CDMA networks, in the hope that the transition to GSM technology will be as painless as possible for their customers.

“Bell’s transition to the global 4G LTE standard with a combined EV-DO and HSPA network path aligns us with more than 30 major carriers worldwide planning a similar move to LTE,” said Stephen Howe, CTO for Bell. “This broad global technology ecosystem will mean a fast, efficient and cost-effective network transition to 4G LTE, and access to the broadest possible range of next-generation phones and data services.”

Bell and Telus’ shift to GSM will likely bring about a major shake up in the Canadian wireless market. With all three carriers having access to the latest and greatest devices, consumers should benefit from the resulting price point war over voice and data services. Post a comment and let us know if you think an all-GSM Canada is a win-win for consumers and carriers not named Rogers.

The BlackBerry Storm available in Canada on multiple carriers

The BlackBerry Storm is launching on Bell and TELUS

The BlackBerry Storm will be coming to Canada on both Bell and TELUS. According to TELUS, they “will be the first in Canada to offer consumers the revolutionary BlackBerry Storm 9530 smartphone from Research In Motion. The addition of this world edition smart phone to TELUS’ line-up cements TELUS’ position as Canada’s smartphone leader with the most smartphones on Canada’s largest 3G network.”

Also, BlackBerry Cool commentor LouTreize has tipped off our site that the BlackBerry Storm will be coming to Bell as well in Canada!

Bell BlackBerry Storm page now live!

bell blackberrry storm

Head to bell.ca/storm and check it out!

There isn’t much there other than an announcement that more info is coming soon, but at least Bell has something that Rogers (and Sprint) don’t! We’ll let you know if any more info develops.

Thanks so much, Flashy Pete!

Bell BlackBerry Storm confirmed, site up later today

bell blackberry storm confirmed

UPDATE: bell.ca/storm is now live! Check it out!

BlackBerry Cool reader Flashy Pete just sent us this image confirming that Bell is in fact getting the BlackBerry Storm, as we had reported early this morning. Who knows what was the cause of the delay (one last sack of gold to be delivered at RIM’s doorstep?), but Flashy Pete also tells us that the bell.ca/storm site should be live some time today!!

Question: which Canadian carrier will sell more Storms, Bell or Telus?

(Special thanks to LouTreize for helping to break this story originally)

Bell to also get the BlackBerry Storm?

bell blackberry storm

WOW Huge news coming via BlackBerry Cool commentor LouTreize who has tipped us off that the BlackBerry Storm will be coming to Bell as well in Canada! Read what he has to say below:

Now these!

“Balsillie said the new touchscreen BlackBerry will also be available in Canada on Bell (TSX:BCE) and Telus (TSX:T) networks later this fall.”
http://www.660news.com/news/business/article.jsp?content=b100802A

RIM will be launching the device with partner carriers Verizon Communications Inc. in the U.S. and Vodafone Group PLC in Europe. Mr. Balsillie said BCE Inc. and Telus Corp. will be selling the Storm by the end of the year.
http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fpposted/archive/2008/10/08/rim-announces-blackberry-storm-available-in-canada-by-end-of-2008.aspx

The question here is whether or not Balsillie/mainstream press screwed up, or Bell is really slow with their PR… If someone from Bell would like to drop us a line, it would be greatly appreciated!!

Seriously, I’m expecting the UPS guy to show up with a Storm at my house any minute now. What other news could possibly go up tonight?

OS 4.5 now available for Bell BlackBerry 8330 (BlackBerry Bytes)

BlackBerry LogoIt looks as though Canada is finally getting some OS 4.5 love this week. Shortly after posting about Rogers making OS 4.5 available for the BlackBerry Curve 8310/8320, Power User Nan Palmero ping’d me to let me know that Bell now has OS 4.5.0.77 available as well for the BlackBerry 8330. This is great news for CDMA BlackBerry Curve users who had previously been stuck in OS 4.3 limbo. We’re checking in on availability for other CDMA BlackBerrys, but for now hit the link below to download OS 4.5:

UPDATE: While OS 4.5 is available for the BlackBerry Pearl, there is no release yet for the BlackBerry 8830 WorldPhone. Sorry!
