Buy your AT&T BlackBerry Bold on eBay now

BlackBerry Bold on AT&T

There’s only 5 hours left of the AT&T BlackBerry Bold. The current price is at $860, so you’ll have to be a complete die-hard BlackBerry/AT&T fan to want to pay. On the other hand, this is a super sweet device and I’m sure the price will jump considerably in the last couple of hours. If anything, we should follow this item just to see how crazy people will get. Oh yeah, and the seller has a feedback rating of 2 so you’ll probably get scammed. Good luck!

AT&T holds BlackBerry Bold launch event without launching the Bold

AT&T BlackBerry Bold party

You have to hand it to AT&T for keeping their chin up and throwing a party even when the guest of honor can’t make it. AT&T’s NYC BlackBerry Bold launch party took place last night, and while the BlackBerry Bold was a little too fashionably late, Michael Phelps was there along with Madonna in video form. Oh yes, everyone in attendance received an IOU for a BlackBerry Bold.

Hmm, a launch event without the release of the launch device. Reminds us of that Rogers BlackBerry Pearl Flip event that happened a few weeks back. Is this the beginning of a trend?

BusinessWeek: BlackBerry Bold costs $169.41 to produce

BlackBerry Bold

Estimating how much any given smartphone costs to produce is always a interesting topic, because it allows industry analysts to guess at just how much money manufacturers are making off their devices. BusinessWeek is reporting that market research firm iSuppli has performed a ‘tear-down analysis’ of the BlackBerry Bold’s private parts and determined that the parts and materials used to make the Bold cost $158.16. With the added cost of assembly and testing, the final cost is $169.41.

“That’s a nice price,” says Charles Wolf, an analyst at Needham & Co. in New York. Assuming RIM sells the device to carriers at about $350, the component costs imply a gross margin of about 45%, in keeping with the gross margins on other RIM devices, he says. The cost estimates from iSuppli don’t include several expenses, including software, marketing, and shipping, and so don’t give a precise indication of the device’s margins.

In comparison, the estimated assembly cost for the BlackBerry Curve is $103, while the iPhone 3G came in at $174.33. If RIM can ever get the Bold launched on AT&T, they’ll be seeing a pretty good return, and a better margin than Apple’s making on the iPhone 3G.

Orange UK suspending BlackBerry Bold shipments?

BlackBerry Bold

Uh-oh. This isn’t good news for the boys and girls in Waterloo. It looks like AT&T isn’t the only carrier having trouble with the BlackBerry Bold. Mobile Tech Addicts got their hands on this internal Orange UK document that speaks for itself:

Following reports of software issues with the BlackBerry Bold handset across a variety of mobile operators, Orange has decided to act in the interest of its customers by suspending shipments of the device in the UK. We are currently awaiting feed back from RIM as to when an industry wide fix for these issues will be in place, and expect this suspension to be an interim measure. We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may cause you.

Next steps: BlackBerry/RIM are doing everything they can to resolve this issue and will be completing full testing and validation to ensure future handsets do not have any quality issues. This may take a couple of weeks so it’s up to us to do what’s best for our customers.

I hope this doesn’t start a trend. Can any Orange users report back to us if they’ve experienced any Bold issues? Do any of the hardcore cellular readers know if there are similarities between Orange and AT&T’s networks?

Safe Mode exists for the BlackBerry Bold

BlackBerry Bold Safe Mode

For all members of the BlackBerry Nation holding out for the BlackBerry Curve 8900 instead of buying the BlackBerry Bold because it has a ‘Safe Mode’ feature (there were at least one or two of you, right?), worry not. Troy over at BlackBerryNews.com has uncovered the feature, which allows you to prevent third-party applications from running automatically, in a version of the BlackBerry Bold OS.

To get ‘Safe Mode’ on your Bold right now, you’ll have to find OS 4.6.0.162 floating somewhere on the Interwebs. Or you can look at some more photos after the jump while continuously selecting ‘Wirless Upgrade’ from your Bold options menu.

BlackBerry Cool BlackBerry Bold Review Header

What, you think we didn’t have one before today? While we’re still not sure when you’ll be able to walk into a Rogers store to actually buy the shiny new device like Simon did, today still marks the official launch of the BlackBerry Bold on Rogers. In honor of this special day, we’ve decided to post our exhaustive review, if only to whet your appetites.

And boy, has this day been a long time coming: three years in development, three months since its official announcement at WES 2008, and three times the hype of any other BlackBerry release. The first in RIM’s next generation lineup of smartphones, the BlackBerry Bold has been labeled everything from an enterprise company’s desperate push into the prosumer space to a true iPhone killer. Most of the BlackBerry faithful are just hoping that it turns out to be a worthy merger and evolution of the BlackBerry 8800 and Curve device lines. This review will settle the debate.

Be forewarned, our review of the BlackBerry Bold is fairly large. However, we’ve broken the review down into specific sections for quick and convenient access to the information you seek. Make sure to post a comment to let us know if there’s anything we’ve missed, anything else you want to know about, and whether or not you feel RIM’s new flagship device meets the hype.

Enough talk! Behold, the BlackBerry Bold.
