BlackBerry Storm launch roundup

BlackBerry Storm

After spending time with the BlackBerry Storm during BBDC, it was a little hard to leave it behind. Thankfully, I did so with full knowledge that it would be returning to my awaiting hands very soon. Here’s the latest in BlackBerry Storm launch rumors for a variety of carriers:

PhoneArena is reporting that Verizon will begin selling the BlackBerry Storm in corporate Nov 15th and the following day at BestBuy locations. Ever since our initial Nov 4th post, the release date has been pushed back one day at a time. While we’ve been currently hearing the 19th from our sources, it’s close enough to not matter too much.

BlackBerry News seems to be wavering back and forth between a November 7th and 11th release date for the Vodafone BlackBerry Storm. CSRs place pricing at around £350 ($538 USD). Please take a look at BBNews’ photos for this post, it made my day.

As we reported earlier today, it appears that Bell may receive the BlackBerry Storm on November 21st, shortly after the two releases above. I wonder if Telus will try to undercut them by releasing on the 20th.

RIM Talks BlackBerry Storm Development

One of the true pleasures of being at the BlackBerry Developer Conference was the opportunity to finally meet RIM’s Developer Support Guru, Mike Kirkup. Mike is a great guy and one of the heroes that helped to make the BlackBerry Cool 15 possible. He’s also the man behind the Open Mike section of the BlackBerry Developer Newsletter, which has a special focus this month on BlackBerry Storm development. In addition to the BlackBerry Storm simulator video, the BlackBerry Developer Newsletter has Mike talking about ‘Compatibility Mode’ and Storm events at the BBDC, and links to a number of useful support documents about Storm development. Check them out below:

Video of BrickBreaker on the BlackBerry Storm

BrickBreaker, the classic comes-with-your-BlackBerry game, is on the Storm and here’s the video. The video is a little long but you get the point really quickly. BrickBreaker is back! In touch form!

BBDC: BlackBerry Storm - the wait continues

It will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine. Wait a minute, I can’t get my BlackBerry Storm until 1 month after it’s been commercially available? That is a long horizon, friends.

BBDC: First hands-on with the BlackBerry Storm

BlackBerry Storm

First off, I apologize for the poor image quality. It’s been well documented what a terrible photographer I am and the coffee isn’t helping. I’ll try to get better shots later, when the RIM police aren’t around. Anyways, here are my quick hands on thoughts.

The device itself is more svelte than you’d expect from photos, being less wide and long than the BlackBerry Bold and about as thick (albeit without the Bold’s slimmer and sexier leather backing). It fits comfortably in your hand both vertically and horizontally, but if you’re looking for one handed texting, SureType is the way to go.

The screen? Works perfectly. RIM knocked it out of the park. You immediately grasp how to use it (from many years of practice with the scrollwheel and scrollball, natch.) and you don’t have to click the screen in very hard to select.

In terms of texting, a couple of tweaks need to be made to get it perfect. First, selecting small input fields is a little tricky right now (like the “http: bar” in the browser), but that’s being worked on. Also, editing something you’ve already written is problematic, because your finger usually covers up the area you’re scrolling to. A magnifying glass feature like on the iPhone would be helpful.

I didn’t get to try copy and paste
, but I will as soon as I can get my hands on the device again.

No Wi-Fi hurts at this conference. The Storm was running on GSM and the EDGE speed to load the BlackBerry Cool website was killer. Also, the browser still has some rendering/javascript issues, but the device isn’t out yet so give it time.

All and all, it’s the BlackBerry experience with a touchscreen. Good job, RIM!

BlackBerry Storm updates: videos and possible release date

BlackBerry Storm at Best Buy

According to BGR, the BlackBerry Storm will be in-stock November 16th at best Buy, but that isn’t necessarily a release date. Also, a ton of BlackBerry Storm videos have hit the Internet. I wasn’t able to embed them but you can check them all out on CrackBerry. The audio on these videos is really strange. For some reason, they decided to only play a fraction of the audio. I guess they were trying to be creative.

BBDC: People want the BlackBerry Storm

This is as close as I got to the Verizon booth before the bearded man in the red shirt gave me flack for snapping a pick of him. Apparently because the device is still in development. I guess he didn’t read BBCool today, heh.

What would you do for a BlackBerry Storm?

BlackBerry Storm Contest

I have to hand it to Kevin, he knows how to get people to humiliate themselves for prizes throw a contest. He’s asking members of the BlackBerry Nation to tell him what they’d do for a BlackBerry Storm (nothing dangerous). The catch is this: if selected, you have to then prove it by recording yourself doing what you said you’d do.

It’s a great contest idea, and we like to think that someone may end up with a BlackBerry Storm tattoo on their body when this is all said and done. Hit the link below for more information:

BlackBerry Cool 15: Win a BlackBerry Storm (or two)!

BlackBerry Storms at the BlackBerry Cool 15

We’re now a weekend away from the BlackBerry Developer Conference, and I couldn’t be more excited. Mike Lazaridis keynote, hands on with the BlackBerry Storm, and the BlackBerry Cool 15. Oh wait, that reminds me, we’ve been talking about the BlackBerry Cool 15 all week, and we haven’t mentioned what the prizes are. Developers take note:

RICK SEGAL OF THE BLACKBERRY PARTNERS FUND will be participating as a judge and taking a keen interest in the applications presented. He will have offer sheets in hands and he is looking to spend, spend, spend.

WE’RE GIVING AWAY TWO BLACKBERRY STORMS! That’s right, not one, but two BlackBerry Storms will be given away at the BlackBerry Cool 15! While one will obviously be going to the developer with the best application, we haven’t decided what to do with the other one yet. Maybe give it to a lucky member of the audience? We’ll see…

You now have NO REASON to miss the BlackBerry Cool 15. Meet us at the Marriott Hotel in session rooms California 7-9 at 8pm on Monday, October 20th (right after the welcome reception). We’ll see you there!
